God or Science? (The evolution of Science)

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
Psalms 19:1-4
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine
nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:20

I love science, I love the fact of what science is and claims to be, I love the fact, science is factual and should it be any less it would not be fit to be called science, I believe science is one of the greatest blessings humanity has been given and I believe it was given by God.
God and science, that’s a phrase that a lot of people don’t believe, go together, they would rather say ‘God or Science’ but I would rather say ‘God of science’. So why the hostility between the two, if indeed God is actually the God of science and science is of God, why do some scientists claim there is no God?
Science is in itself good, it is like every other creation of God, complete and perfect, the issue comes with our knowledge of science, its laws and principles. The great divide between science and God is neither science nor God but man, and in particular the evolving knowledge of man. While science is in itself complete, man’s knowledge of it is grossly deficient, even today where we believe we are enlightened, we are still very far from a full, complete and accurate knowledge of science.

One of the reasons I make this assertion is because, the closer you get to a fuller knowledge of science the closer you get to a knowledge of God, every design says something of its designer, every artwork reveals a little more of the artist, creation is filled with attributes of its creator, in understanding creation, reflections of the creator is seen all over.

Science is defined as the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment [1], it is also defined as a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws [2]. According to our first definition, science studies in a particular manner the physical and natural world and the bible declares God made the physical and natural world [3], Hence we state: science leads to a knowledge of God. It is however one thing to have knowledge about God and another thing to acknowledge it is indeed a knowledge about God [4]. God has designed it such that the more a scientist discovers, the more he has faith in God, because science points to God, its creator. The error comes from most parts when we make conclusive judgements from incomplete knowledge, this is true in every scientific field.

The error comes from most parts when we make conclusive judgements from incomplete knowledge,

For an example: in the social science, taking marriage as an example mankind has held marriage more as an innate and cultural and later religious concept than as a scientific one, so now in this age of information where ‘sexual revolution’ is trumpeted,
people have begun to discard marriage as found in the bible, young unmarried people now live in together, the wife claims she is as much a head of the home as the husband, homosexual marriages are now in vogue. Why? We have been given partially true, partially incomplete and partially false words and told to make complete true sentences and from there we have written incomplete and partly false pages and compiled incomplete and partly false chapters and now we live our lives from this book of confusion we have written by ourselves, which to us is a masterpiece of our intelligence, but it in reality is a product of a mind given over to its depravity.

The sexual revolution which promised fulfillment, freedom and happiness which began in the 1960’s in America flung the doors wide open to a number of social vices which many see as virtues, one of which is the issue of Cohabitation (the practise of unmarried people living together), many believed this would give a stronger marriage and a more happy life, however recent research shows different: The national marriage project, an initiative at the University of Virginia which is not religiously affiliated stated in a recent research:
“Not surprisingly, young adults favor cohabitation. According to surveys, most young people say it is a good idea to live with a person before marrying. But a careful review of the available social science evidence suggests that living together is not a good way to prepare for marriage or to avoid divorce.

What’s more, it shows that the rise in cohabitation is not a positive family trend. Cohabiting unions tend to weaken the institution of marriage and pose special risks for women and children. Specifically, the research indicates that:

● Living together before marriage increases the risk of breaking up after marriage.
● Living together outside of marriage increases the risk of domestic violence for women, and the risk
of physical and sexual abuse for children.
● Unmarried couples have lower levels of happiness and well being than married couples. “[5]

The average believer doesn’t need a statistic to know living with someone you are not married to is a bad idea, the bible ages past pointed out to avoid youthful lust and worldly passions[6], social science has evolved or grown in knowledge to point out today, what the bible said yesterday for a fulfilled marriage. The fruits of our own past ignorant social assertions abound all over; STD’S, crumbling homes, sky high divorce rates, wild kids, depression, personal lack of fulfillment etc.

Some scientists dimly see certain things and make conclusive theories from them, they conclude on evolution as man’s origin and the big bang theory as the origin of life, if they knew more they would see the science of man actually points to the what the bible says (for instance that the whole human species began from one couple), and in the process of doing so scientist trip over scientific laws (for instance if the big bang is the beginning, what/who caused the big bang? The law of causality simply put states; every material effect must have an adequate cause that existed before the effect[7A]. This foundational theory is seen all over Newton’s laws of motions, the first of which states; Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it’[7B], the point being; something cannot come from nothing, nothing moves until something or someone moves it.

something cannot come from nothing, nothing moves until something or someone moves it.

Advocator’s of atheism who point origins to the Big bang have no answers to these questions. These laws are true for creation but not for the creator, because God by definition is the uncreated creator, who has always been and has no birthday, He is a spirit who spoke spiritual words and they caused physical manifest reactions, it is only God who ‘calleth those things which be not as though they were’. Science is defined as the study of physical and natural laws, but God is a Spirit[7C], hence out of the scope of science, because you can’t capture spiritual things in a test tube or analyse it in a laboratory. Many scientists because they cannot subject spiritual realities to physical tests, erroneously conclude the non-existence of such.

The believer’s understanding of the scripture is paramount, many times in the scripture God tells us what He does but does not tell us how He does it; in Genesis, the bible said God created the waters, it did not tell us how, science later comes and tells us that water comes about when two atoms of Hydrogen and one atom of oxygen join together. The bible tells us God sends the rain, science tells us how: through the process of evaporation causing the clouds to become full and the working of gravity on these clouds. The bible tells us God suspends the earth upon nothing[7D], Science comes and tells us how: through the working of gravitational force between the sun and the earth. The bible tells us God gives children, Science comes and explains how: the sperm from a man fertilizes
the egg from a woman forming a single cell which develops into a baby. God told us he made the galaxies and the universe [7E], science explains to its current knowledge just how big and majestic it is, through the use of telescopes and specialized spaceships.
Science is not an enemy of faith, I believe it will prove to be one of our closest friends, the challenge like I have tried to point out is the fact that a number of scientists especially those who try to draw dividing lines against faith have half-baked scientific theories which are inaccurate, incomplete or misleading. And in many ways the scientific world and the world at large does not even know yet that we do not know, but we catch a glimpse of this truth by understanding and faith in scriptures.

To buttress this point, I share a few documented instances:
1. Prior to the middle of the 20th century scientists believed the Earth’s continents were stable and did not move. This began to change in 1912 with Alfred Wegener’s formulation of the continental drift theory, and later and more properly the elucidation of plate tectonics during the 1950s and 1960s.[8A]
2. In the century’s past, the generally accepted scientific theory and the brightest minds of
science in those days (including Greece), with few exceptions believed the world was flat,
when in fact the bible had all the while said in Isaiah 40:22 ‘He had pointed out the circular shape of the earth’ (written 732 BC), as science evolved and gained more knowledge it discovered this truth and it’s initial error and accurately changed till it became a sure fact.

Dr James Dobson in his book ‘when God doesn’t make sense’ said; If human intelligence and perception are undependable in accessing everyday reality, which can be seen, touched, heard, tasted and smelled, how much less capable is it of evaluating the unfathomable God of the universe?

This is the nature of science, discovering and rediscovering.

It is however poignant to point that the history of the church has shown that the church has in some instances viewed certain aspects of science as a threat, in 1633 the church found Galileo “vehemently suspect of heresy”, sentencing him to indefinite imprisonment[8B], this was majorly due to his scientific findings of the earth not being the center of the universe, up until then the church and popular scientific opinions had claimed that the earth was the center of the universe, time proved the
scientist correct. We must clearly distinguish church dogmas which may arise from culture, politics or even wrong interpretation of scriptures from doctrines and true scriptures. They are over a hundred predictions of when the rapture and final days on earth would be, all of which have all failed (some of those who prophesied include; John Napier, John Wesley, Isaac Newton and pope Sylvester II)[8C]. A mix of both scientist and religious leaders.

If a truth from the scriptures seems to be opposite scientific findings, then watch it, even if it would take centuries (as it did in the case of the flat earth). Science as long as it keeps advancing or evolving will grow in its knowledge and findings to find out that the bible is correct. Faith is the evidence of things not seen, faith in the word is believing that the word is true and correct even if your physical eyes can at the time not see it, you must believe that God is who He is, as revealed in the scripture, that the accounts of the scriptures are historically correct, that all scripture is given by God and is
profitable for instruction, correction and admonishment in righteousness, that the word of God is the final bus stop, Jesus said ‘blessed is he who having not seen yet believes’[9]. In the faith seeing is not believing, no! Believing is seeing.

The fact is that as long as science keeps evolving (improving), it will go up, come down, move around and come back to the same conclusions the bible has already made. This is already what is being discovered in the Social sciences in America, Social scientist are beginning to understand the deep dangers of pornography to the individual mind, marriages, family and society as a whole, they are beginning to see through research and case studies that romantic involvements like cohabitation, pre-marital sex, past boyfriends or girlfriends etc. actually cause more troubles for marriages, people
who come with these ‘baggage’s’ into marriage, tend to have unhappier and more divorce plagued marriages [10]. These are facts from non-religious scholars from one of the top research institutions worldwide (University of Virginia), they have only begun to prove that God’s wisdom stands supreme, that it is for our good the word tells us to keep our eyes pure, to abstain from youthful lust, to flee fornication and the like. One of the research conclusively states “We believe, both for the sake of today’s twentysomethings and their children, that we can and should bring marriage and childbearing back into sync”[11]. In a culture that seems to attack traditional institutions like marriage
and chastity, this is worth nothing. In time there will be more research work which will keep on syncing with scriptural insights.

Science may not lead men directly to Christ (just like nature alone cannot lead men to a saving knowledge of Christ), but it can point, it can point to higher wisdom and intelligence, design and creativity only possible by a divine uncreated, passionate, all-embracing, unconditional loving God. It is us, who are the ambassadors of Christ[12] who have the privilege of leading men, literate and illiterate, scientists and non-scientists, religious and irreligious, to the saving knowledge of Christ. A task we must take with all sobriety.

In conclusion, I have tried to point out that science is not an enemy of faith, it in actuality is proof of God and a pointer to God, any scientific finding which points people away from God is either an incomplete finding, a wrongly interpreted finding or a false deliberate plot to undermine God in the minds of men, of which many a scientist can do without even knowing. God is the number one originator and creator, the devil cannot originate anything, the devil perverts the good creation of God for evil purposes, so that elements that were created to bless are used to hurt, creatures that were designed for good, bring evil. If there is an enemy against us, it is neither science nor God, but the devil and our ignorance. So therefore pursue knowledge and seek wisdom, give yourself to the
scriptures that you may defend the faith[13] and show what is the hope you have believed, let your roots go deep in the word and you will be able to judge what is the good and acceptable will of God, for our God, is the God of science.
